He declared in August 2017 that he did not aspire to be buried next to the Queen which was a result of his longtime complaint of only being named Prince Consort, and not King Consort.

Henrik planned his final surprise for his wife at his funeral as he had asked the flowers to be arranged into a “blooming garden” as a tribute to his partner of 50 years.

He was cremated on February 20, 2018, with half of the ashes scattered across Danish seas and half placed in the private part of the gardens at Fredensborg Palace.

Henrik took a great interest in art and culture and was also a keen winemaker who produced his own wine at his estate in France.

He was fluent in French, Danish, English, German, Chinese, and Vietnamese.
